Activities:
Examination, licensing, and regulation of persons engaged in the practices of medicine: physicians (SDCL 36-4) and physician assistants (SDCL 36-4A), emergency medical services: advanced and basic life support (SDCL 36-4B); respiratory care (SDCL 36-4C), dietetics and nutrition (36-10B), athletic training (SDCL 36-29), occupational therapy (SDCL 36-31), and genetic counseling (SDCL 36-36).

Composition:
Seventeen members appointed by the Governor as follows: nine physicians, one physician assistant, one emergency medical services personnel, one respiratory care practitioner, one nutritionist or dietician, one athletic trainer. one occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant, one genetic counselor, and one representative of the public.
Term of Appointment:
Terms shall expire on October 30 on the third year of appointment. No member may serve more than three consecutive full terms.

The mission of the South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners is to protect the health and welfare of the state's citizens by assuring that only qualified allopathic and osteopathic physicians, athletic trainers, dietitians, emergency medical services personnel, genetic counselors, licensed nutritionists, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, physician assistants, and respiratory care practitioners are licensed to practice in South Dakota.
