Board Information

Authorization:
Chapter 1-44 of the South Dakota Codified Laws
Activities:
Determines road construction priorities. Plans to meet the highway needs of the state and advises the department on overall transportation needs.
Organization:
Department of Transportation. Board retains quasi-judicial, quasi-legislative, advisory, nonadministrative and special budgetary functions.
Composition:
Nine members appointed by the Governor. Not all from the same political party. No two appointed members may at the same time be a resident of the same county. Two members from Area 1(Northeast); Three members for Area 2 (Southeast); Two members from Area 3 (Central); Two members from Area 4 (Western). A member shall at all times during each respective appointment be a resident of such area.
Term of Appointment:
Terms shall expire on April 18 of the fourth year of the term.

Frequency of Meetings:
4th Thursday of the month plus a conference call meeting the 2nd Thursday of the month February - June and September - November. September meeting historically is a two day meeting on location including a meeting and a tour. The location varies.
