Authorization:
Chapter 24-13 of the South Dakota Codified Laws
Activities:
Recommends pardons to the Governor, conducts hearings and takes action on inmate petitions for parole.
Organization:
Department of Corrections. Board retains quasi-judicial, quasi-legislative, advisory, and nonadministrative functions.
Composition:
2002 Legislature- Increase membership to nine members. Nine members. Three appointed by the Governor (one must be an attorney). Three members appointed by the attorney general (one must be an attorney) and three members appointed by the Supreme Court (one must be an attorney). Each member shall be a resident of South Dakota and be appointed with the advice and consent of the Senate.
Term of Appointment:
Four years, expiring the 3rd Monday in January. In case of a vacancy, the appointing power shall make an interim appointment to expire at the end of the next legislative session

Twelve each year
