Activities:
Examination, licensing and regulation of persons engaged in the practices of medicine and osteopathy (SDCL 36-4), physicians assistants (SDCL 36-4A), advanced life support (SDCL 36-4B), respiratory care (SDCL 36-4C), medical assistant (SDCL 36-9B), physical therapy (SDCL 36-10), dietetics and nutrition (36-10B), athletic training (SDCL 36-29), occupational therapy (SDCL 36-31), and genetic counseling (SDCL 36-36).

Composition:
Nine members appointed by the Governor as follows: 1. Two lay members (One lay member may be a non-physician health care professional licensed by the board ; 2. Six doctors of medicine holding an M.D. degree; and, 3. One doctor of osteopathy holding the degree of D.O..
Term of Appointment:
Terms shall expire on October 30 on the third year of appointment. No member may serve more than three consecutive full terms.

Frequency of Meetings:
4 meetings per year (DDN locations in Pierre and Rapid City for meetings)

The mission of the South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners is to protect the health and welfare of the state's citizens by assuring that only qualified allopathic and osteopathic physicians, advanced life support personnel, athletic trainers, dietitians, genetic counselors, licensed nutritionists, medical assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, physician assistants, physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and respiratory care practitioners are licensed to practice in South Dakota.
